The Garden

The Lion occupies a generous spot in Waddesdon village with ample parking—a real comfort when visiting nearby Waddesdon Manor—and a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to countryside hospitality. The pub itself is rooted in Victorian coaching-inn character, with traditional interiors that speak to its heritage, though the garden and outdoor spaces are modest and practical rather than elaborate. What counts here is the genuine welcome and honest pub food—crispy-battered haddock, proper ham, egg and chips—served without pretence by staff who seem genuinely pleased to see you. It’s the sort of place that works as well for a quick weekday lunch as it does for an overnight stay, with the Oxfordshire countryside rolling beyond, and no fuss about what a country pub should be.
