The Garden

The Argyll sits in the heart of Henley with a surprisingly expansive beer garden that sprawls beyond what you’d expect from a roadside local — plenty of booths and tables scattered across the space, making it an easy spot to settle in with a pint after exploring the town or catching the Morris dancing that occasionally passes through. It’s the sort of unfussy place where locals gather, where a decent ale selection matters more than fuss, and where the countryside hospitality feels genuine rather than performed. The pub has earned its minor moment of television fame (two Midsomer Murders episodes were filmed here), which seems about right for a characterful watering hole that doesn’t make a song and dance about it. On a good day — and most days seem to be — it’s exactly the kind of proper country pub worth knowing about: honest, welcoming, and with enough outdoor space to feel like you’ve properly escaped.
